The Palmetto State
Capital: Columbia
The eighth state joined the Union in 1788. Southern belles, plantations, and warm beaches. War and slavery. South Carolina has a lot going on for such a small population.
Charleston: Also called Carolopolis...the combination of 'Carolus' (Latin for Charles) and 'polis' (Greek for city). King Charles II was on the throne in England at the time of the found of the city in 1607...Some people casually refer to the city as Chuck City. The city is also known as The Holy City because religious tolerance was high at the time.
Regardless of what you want to call it, this is a beautiful southern town. There are plantations that talk about souther affluence and slavery, Civil War history, beautiful Greco-Roman architecture, and great food.
South Carolina State Capitol: A small but significant tribute to South Carolinians.
