The county was ruled by Ottomans and Austrians before becoming the dominant force in Yugoslavia. They partnered up with Montenegro for a bit before ultimately separating in 2006. Kosovo declared independence in 2008 but have only recently been recognized as a nation, rather than a UN administrative zone.


Niš: College town. Birthplace of Constantine The Great. The Niš Fortress dominates one end of town while new shopping and residential high rises dominate the other end.
