The Buckeye State

First off, what is a buckeye? It's a nut off the buckeye tree. The nuts have a dark brown shell with a light brown spot in the middle, making it look kind of like an eye. The buckeye tree is native to this area and many products have been made from its wood for a long time.
The 17th state joined the Union, retroactively, in 1803. Congress agreed to make Ohio a state but never formally voted on it until 1953, when they declared statehood retroactive to when the local legislature first met.
