Macedonia is a broader region surrounding the Aegean Sea and was ruled by Alexander The Great. The country of N. Macedonia northwest of Pella, the Greek capital of the Macedonian Empire.
Like many of its neighbors, the country was ruled by Ottomans, became part of Yugoslavia, and gained independence in 1991.
