Crabs. The Star Spangled Banner. The seventh state joined the Union in 1788.


Maryland State Capitol: This is where General George Washington submitted his resignation to the Continental Congress, rather than seize power for himself. The Old Line is a reference to the Maryland Line, line troops who served in the Revolutionary War.


National Park Sites Visited

Antietam National Battlefied: The bloodiest day of the Civil War occurred here.

Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine: The only shrine in the National Park Service. The national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, was inspired by the Battle of Baltimore (War of 1812) that took place here.

Fort Washington Park: A defensive fort that was destroyed during the War of 1812.
