Istanbul, not Constantinople 🎶...Probably the most known city in Türkiye (Turkey). Split between two continents, Europe and Asia. Constantine of the Byzantines, Sultans of the Ottomans, Christianity, Islam. East does meet west in this city.

Hagia Sofia: A bucket list item for me. Check. The building was first a Christian cathedral, then became an Islamic mosque, then a museum, and now back to a mosque. Even though actively used as a mosque, the popularity of the site cannot be ignored and tours are still allowed. As a mosque, several of the artworks are covered (as faces are considered idols in Islamic holy places).

Blue Mosque: Also known as the Sultan Ahmet Mosque, this is located across the Ayasofya Meydani plaza from the Hagia Sofia. Completed in 1617 and equally stunning in architecture to Hagia Sofia. This is also an active mosque so shoes come off on the carpet and women need to cover their heads.

Topkapi Palace: Official residence of the sultans who ruled the Ottoman Empire. The site is sprawling compound with many places to visit. Wear comfortable shoes and plan to spend several hours here.

Fener: A neighborhood with colorful houses, European style cafes, and Christian churches.
