The Prairie State

Capital: Springfield

The 21st state joined the Union in 1818. This is the Prairie State because settlers found highly wooded areas in the east part of the country. This is the first place they found open prairies. Modern efforts to change the slogan to The Land of Lincoln sound reasonable. Abraham Lincoln moved here to practice law, started a career in politics, and is entombed here.
