Located in Beatrice, Nebraska. The National Historic Site is in a pretty remote location and I wouldn't put it on a 'must see' list. If you're in the area for some reason, stop by for an hour.
The site is dedicated to the Homestead Act of 1862. The legislation allowed people to claim up to 160 acre parcels of land, mostly in the west, to adult citizens. There were a few other stipulations that came with it but it changed the face of America. Foremost, claimants often moved into or near Native Indian settlements, which caused friction. This turned up the dial on Manifest Destiny. The small Palmer Epard Cabin, relocated from of up the road, was built in 1867 and reflects the simple lodgings often constructed, especially during initial years on the land.
