This is a National Monument but it is also the only Historic Shrine in the National Park System. Located in Baltimore, Maryland, the site preserves the history of the Star Spangled Banner, the national anthem of the United States. Francis Scott Key was inspired by the Battle of Baltimore that took place, with bombs bursting in air during the final days of the War of 1812 (which ended in 1814). The site also served as a strategic defense during the US Civil War. The presentation in the visitor center is dramatic and well composed. This should be on a list of sites to see given its unique and honorary status.
