This National Historic Site is located in Larned, KS (center-ish of the state). The primary purpose for the fort was to protect trade along the Santa Fe Trail, which led from Boonville, Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico. The fort became a private farm after it was sold. It became a park site due to the conservation efforts of locals and the eventual intervention of the National Park Service.
