This National Historic Site is located about 1.75 hours north of Cheyenne, Wyoming...not west of Cheyenne in the city of Laramie. The site was originally established as a private buffalo fur trading post (Fort John) with the Lakota Sioux. The US Army purchased the outpost as traffic from people migrating from points east headed to California, Utah, and Oregon, Utah. The site was eventually auctioned off in 1890 with the end of the Indian Wars. It became part of the National Park Service in 1938.
