Located in Hopkins, South Carolina. The Park protects an old growth bottomland hardwood forest. This type of forest occurs in low-lying areas prone to flooding. Some of these trees, such as bald cypress and loblolly pine, develop 'knees', little stumps that you might bump your knee on if you weren't paying attention. There is debate in the scientific community as to the purpose (supply oxygen to the roots, anchor the tree in wet soil, etc). Regardless, they're interested to see. While there are many areas of the park to explore, I went on a walk along the Boardwalk Loop Trail. Easy and relatively flat.
