The National Historic Site, located in Topeka, Kansas, is straight forward in presentation. The history is much deeper though. This school, Monroe Elementary, was segregated and well funded to be considered 'equal'. However, local parents challenged segregation and joined as plaintiffs in the case against the Board of Eduction of Topeka for segregation of school and 'separate but equal'. The US Supreme Court ruled segregation was unconstitutional, even if schools were otherwise 'equal'.
