This National Historic Site, in Appomattox, Virginia, is dedicated to the end of the Civil War. It was at nearby Sailor's Creek Battlefield State Park that General Robert E. Lee's army was dealt a final blow. Despite the name of the park, the formal surrender of the Confederate Army to General Ulysses S. Grant was conducted at the house of the McLean family, not the nearby Appomattox Courthouse. The terms were rather favorable to reconciliation of the 'southern rebels'.
